Same-Day Crowns in Grande Prairie

Why spend more time at the dentist than absolutely necessary? Same day crowns can minimize dental headaches and give you more time to do what you love doing.

Crowns are really important if you like your teeth, but traditional crowns can be a pain and usually take at least two dental visits.

Wapiti Dental in Grande Prairie uses the latest technology to prepare a tooth and place a crown all in one appointment. This makes for a great dental experience.

What are Same Day Crowns?

A dental crown surrounds the exterior of your tooth. It’s like a cap, or a hat, for your tooth. But it fits really tight and is very strong. When a large filling or root canal is needed, your tooth is weakened. Crowns protect the tooth by holding it together.

So, what’s the difference between same day and traditional crowns?

1. Traditional crown

Traditional crowns can be made from a variety of materials. They can be zirconia, porcelain, porcelain fused to metal, or gold. These crowns are made in a dental lab and require multiple appointments. Your tooth is prepared, impressions are taken and a temporary crown is placed in the first appointment. The temporary crown is removed and the permanent, lab-created, crown is placed during the second appointment. Overall, it’s a long process with extra steps that aren’t required with same day crowns.

2. Same day crowns

Same day crowns are dental crowns that are made from a tooth colored material called zirconia. Zirconia is super strong! Instead of ooey-gooey uncomfortable impressions, we use a quick and painless intraoral scanner. We’ll then mill the crown in-office and place it during the same appointment. No need for multiple appointments or extra time in the dental chair.

How are same day crowns made?

Same-day crowns are made from zirconia, which comes in a variety of tooth colored shades that can be stained and glazed to match your existing teeth. These crowns are created in the dentist’s office through advanced CAD/CAM technology. CAD/CAM stands for computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing.

We’ll use a small hand-held digital scanner around the size of a toothbrush to scan your tooth. This digital scan gets sent to the milling machine to fabricate a crown that matches your bite and the shape of your teeth. The total process to make the crown takes 15 – 30 minutes with a total appointment time of around an hour and a half.
